Description: This was my first studio work that i used oil paint. I started in the piece to use my culture (Egyptian) as an influence. This oil painting is a painting of a women wearing the phranoic dress, and accessorized with common things Ancient Egyptian women used to wear. My influence for this Studio Work was Janet Hill. She related the dress in the painting to the background. I chose an Ancient Egyptian design and painted it as the background.
Media/Process: The media for this piece was oil paint. I bought wood instead of canvas. I drew the drawing with pencil very lightly, first to ensure that there would be no mistakes. I then chose colors that were common at that time in Egypt. I chose blue, orange, red, green, and yellow. I painted the dress the very first thing, then the background. Then I painted the accessories on, and tried to be very precise. The last thing was to draw the face, which needed the most work.
Influence: My influence for this piece was “Janet Hill”. She uses oil paint to do painting that relate to fashion. In her “364 days of dresses”, she drew dresses in oil paint. The dress had to relate to the background. I chose Ancient Egypt, and used the drawings they had on their walls.
Strengths: I'm usually not very good at drawing the face and hair. This time I liked how I did the face and hair. I was able to do the nose, eyes, and mouth well without messing them up. As for the hair, I liked how I was able to mix in the colors, and paint the golden things in the hair on.
Weaknesses: Oil paint was a little messy. The background mixed in with the color of the hand. I did not leave it to dry before I painted the hand on. This was a mistake. The background color and dress were kind of the same. Even though, they were very different when I was mixing the colors.
Critique: Overall, I think the oil painting was good. I liked the use of culture in my drawings, I think I want to continue with that. I also liked working with oil paint, and I will use it again.
Development for Next Piece: I will continue with drawing Ancient Egyptians. I liked incorporating my culture into my drawings. Next piece will be the same idea, but I will use pencil instead. I will use values to make it realistic.
